A sandwich wrap does two jobs. It keeps moisture and sauce inside the fold, and it carries your brand from the counter to the customer. Plain wax paper does the first job. Custom wax paper does both.
Custom wax paper is paper coated or impregnated with food-grade wax and printed with your logo in food-safe inks. The wax adds a moisture barrier and a non-stick surface, so the paper wraps sandwiches, burgers, deli meats, cheese and baked goods without sticking or soaking through.
We print custom wax paper in dry wax and wet wax, with paraffin, soy or microcrystalline wax coatings, on white or natural kraft stock from 18 lb to 55 lb. Choose flat sheets, interfolded sheets, rolls or wax paper bags. All of it is PFAS free, with a 50-unit minimum and a 6 to 8 day turnaround.
What Is Custom Wax Paper?
Custom wax paper is food wrap paper treated with wax and printed with a brand’s logo, pattern or message. Delis, sandwich shops, burger restaurants, bakeries, butcher counters and cheese shops use it to wrap, line and separate food. “Wax paper” and “waxed paper” are two names for the same product.
How Wax Paper Is Made
- Base paper: a thin, smooth food-grade paper, bleached white or unbleached natural kraft, is chosen by basis weight.
- Printing: your design is printed with food-safe inks in flexo or digital.
- Waxing: molten wax is applied to one or both sides. Dry waxing drives the wax into the fibers. Wet waxing leaves a layer of wax on the surface.
- Cooling and converting: the wax sets into a non-stick layer, and the web is cut into sheets, interfolded, rewound into rolls or formed into bags.
Dry Wax vs Wet Wax Paper
Dry wax paper has the wax pressed into the fibers, so the surface feels smooth but not waxy. Wet wax paper has a visible layer of wax on the surface, so it looks glossy and gives a stronger moisture barrier. Choose dry wax for sandwiches, burgers and bakery items. Choose wet wax for refrigerated meat, cheese and frozen storage.
| Feature | Dry wax paper | Wet wax paper |
|---|---|---|
| Where the wax sits | Pressed into the fibers with heated rollers | Coated on the surface |
| Look and feel | Matte to satin, not waxy to the touch | Glossy, waxy surface |
| Moisture barrier | Good | Higher |
| Wax transfer | Does not transfer to food | Surface wax gives the strongest seal |
| Common weights | 18 to 30 lb | 25 to 55 lb |
| Best for | Sandwiches, burgers, subs, cookies, basket liners, deli sheets | Meat and cheese wrap, produce, freezer storage, candy dipping |
One-Side vs Two-Side Waxed Paper
Two-side waxed paper has a moisture barrier on both faces and is the standard for food wraps. One-side waxed paper keeps one face unwaxed, which takes pen marks and labels more easily and suits food that only touches one side.
Wax Coating Options
The wax decides how the paper looks, how it folds and how it fits your brand’s sourcing goals. All coatings are food-grade.
Paraffin wax
The traditional coating for wax paper. A refined, petroleum-derived wax that gives a clean, consistent moisture barrier at the lowest cost.
Soy wax
A plant-based wax made from soybean oil. A fit for brands that want to avoid petroleum-based wax and tell a plant-based packaging story.
Microcrystalline wax blend
A wax with finer crystals that stays more flexible than straight paraffin. It resists cracking at the fold, which helps for tight wraps and cold storage.
Custom wax blends
Paraffin, soy and microcrystalline waxes can be blended to balance gloss, flexibility, barrier and cost for a specific food.

Wax Paper Weights and What Each One Is For
Wax paper is sold by basis weight: the weight in pounds of one ream of the paper. A higher number means a thicker, stronger sheet.
| Basis weight | Approx. gsm | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 lb | 29 | Very light, tissue-like | Bakery tissue, pastry and cookie separators |
| 21 lb | 34 | Light, folds tight | Dry wax sandwich and burger wraps, basket liners |
| 25 lb | 41 | Standard | Deli sheets, subs, wraps, cheese |
| 30 lb | 49 | Firmer | Heavy sandwiches, tray liners, produce |
| 40 lb | 65 | Heavy | Wet wax meat and cheese wrap, freezer storage |
| 55 lb | 89 | Heaviest | Butcher counter meats, frozen goods, candy dipping |
Flat Sheet Sizes by Food Item
Measure the food or the basket, then choose the next size up so the paper folds fully around the item.
Interfolded Sheets, Rolls and Bags
| Format | Common sizes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Interfolded sheets | 8 x 10.75 in, 10 x 10.75 in, 12 x 10.75 in, 15 x 10.75 in | Deli counters and bakeries; staff pull one sheet at a time from a dispenser box |
| Rolls | 12, 15, 18 and 24 in wide; custom widths and lengths | Butcher and cheese counters that cut paper to each order |
| Wax paper bags | Sandwich, cookie and pastry sizes; custom on request | Grab-and-go items, cookies, pastries, candy |
Is Custom Printed Wax Paper Food Safe and PFAS Free?
Yes. Our custom wax paper is PFAS free, coated with food-grade wax and printed with food-safe inks for direct contact with food.
The 2024 FDA PFAS Phase-Out
On February 28, 2024, the FDA announced that PFAS grease-proofing substances are no longer sold for food contact use in the US. Wax gets its barrier from the wax itself, not from PFAS.
State PFAS Laws
California, New York, Washington, Minnesota and other states restrict intentionally added PFAS in food packaging. One PFAS free wrap covers every location.
Food-Grade Wax
Paraffin, soy and microcrystalline coatings are food-grade, so the waxed side can touch sandwiches, meat and cheese directly.
Moisture vs Hot Grease
Wax paper is built for moisture. For very hot, oily food straight from the fryer, custom greaseproof paper holds grease better.
Custom Printing Options for Wax Paper
Printed wax paper carries your logo, a repeating pattern, a tagline, a social handle or a QR code. Full color CMYK reproduces photos and gradients; Pantone spot colors match brand colors exactly.
Flexo printing
Printing plates transfer ink at high speed. Best for longer runs, 1 to 2 brand colors and the lowest unit cost at volume.
Digital printing
No plates; prints straight from the file. Best for short runs, first orders, full color and seasonal designs.
Artwork That Works on Wax Paper
- Use a repeating pattern so the logo shows on every face of the wrapped item.
- On natural kraft stock, dark inks read best; light colors look muted.
- Keep fine lines above hairline weight so they hold under the wax layer.
- Supply vector artwork (AI, EPS or PDF) and check the digital proof at actual size.
Wax Paper for Every Food and Business
Delis and sandwich shops
Dry wax sheets wrap subs, hoagies and wraps and keep dressings inside the fold.
Burger restaurants
Wrap burgers and line baskets with branded sheets that do not stick to the bun.
Bakeries and cookie shops
Light sheets separate cookies, pastries and cakes, and line display trays.
Butcher shops
Heavy wet wax rolls wrap cuts for the fridge and freezer.
Cheese shops
Wax paper lets cheese breathe while holding in moisture better than plain paper.
Candy and chocolate makers
Use as dipping sheets, separators and twist wraps for caramels and fudge.
Wax Paper vs Greaseproof, Parchment and Butcher Paper
Each food paper is built for a different job. Match the paper to the food and the heat.
| Paper | Barrier | Oven | Microwave | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax paper | Wax coating; strong moisture barrier | No; wax melts around 115 to 154 F | Only if labeled | Sandwiches, deli, cheese, cold and frozen storage |
| Greaseproof paper | Dense, refined fibers; holds grease | Can line a greased tin; not non-stick | Not designed as a cover | Hot, greasy and fried food |
| Parchment paper | Silicone coating; non-stick | Yes, to the box limit (often 420 to 425 F) | Most are labeled safe | Baking and roasting |
| Butcher paper | Strong kraft; lets meat breathe | Used unwaxed for BBQ wrapping in smokers | Not designed for it | Raw meat, BBQ, brisket |
Wrapping a cold sandwich or a cut of cheese: choose wax paper. Serving fries or fried chicken: choose greaseproof paper. Baking: choose parchment. For precut interfolded counter sheets, see custom deli paper.
Recyclable and Compostable Wax Paper Options
Wax-coated paper is not accepted by every curbside recycling program, because the wax has to be separated from the fiber. Compostable options are available for brands with sustainability goals, and soy wax suits brands that want a plant-based coating. Check local rules before printing disposal guidance on the wrap.
Pair Wax Paper With Your Boxes
Order the paper and the box from one supplier so the sheet fits the box from day one. See custom bakery boxes and all custom printed papers.

Custom Wax Paper FAQs
What is the difference between dry wax and wet wax paper?
Dry wax paper has the wax pressed into the fibers, so it feels smooth but not waxy and the wax does not transfer to food. Wet wax paper has a layer of wax on the surface, so it is glossy and gives a stronger moisture barrier for meat, cheese and frozen storage.
Can wax paper go in the oven?
No. The wax melts at oven temperatures and can smoke. Use parchment paper for baking. Wax paper works for wrapping, lining cold trays and separating food.
Can wax paper go in the microwave?
Only if the product is labeled microwave safe, and only as a loose cover for short reheating. It should not touch the heating element or be used for long cooking.
Is custom printed wax paper food safe?
Yes. It is coated with food-grade wax, printed with food-safe inks and made for direct contact with food. It is also PFAS free.
What wax coatings can I choose?
Paraffin, soy, microcrystalline or a custom blend. Paraffin is the traditional coating, soy is plant-based, and microcrystalline stays more flexible at the fold.
What weights and sizes does custom wax paper come in?
Basis weights run from 18 lb to 55 lb. Flat sheets run from 6 x 6 in to 18 x 18 in, interfolded sheets from 8 x 10.75 in to 15 x 10.75 in, and rolls from 12 to 24 in wide. Custom sizes are available.
What is the minimum order for custom wax paper?
The minimum order is 50 units, and the turnaround is 6 to 8 days.
Is wax paper the same as greaseproof paper?
No. Wax paper uses a wax coating and is best for moisture. Greaseproof paper uses dense fibers to hold back oil and is better for hot, fried and greasy food.
